I love working with writers at all stages. For the past 15 years, I’ve taught courses on writing for young readers at the University of Washington, as well as privately. I’m now bringing my teaching to the University of San Francisco, where I teach two certificate courses as part of USF’s MFA in Writing for Young Readers. (If you’re not quite ready for an MFA, my classes might be just what you’re looking for.) I also offer workshops, consultations, and ongoing coaching.
For more than 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with numerous editors, agents, authors, and illustrators to develop programming for conferences, retreats, and classes.
One of my proudest moments was being recognized as the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators 2009 Member of the Year, and now I’m honored to welcome hundreds of first-time attendees to SCBWI conferences (online and in New York City), helping them make the most of their experience. It’s one of my favorite things.
I hold a master’s degree in teaching, proudly write for SCBWI’s Team Blog, and am the editor of the 2026 edition of The Essential Guide to Publishing Books for Children. My short story, “Ghosts Around These Parts,” appears in The Haunted States of America. I am represented by Kayla Cichello at Upstart Crow Literary.
